I worked as a Case Manger with mainly people who had schizophrenia. We knew our clients very well but one minute they seemed lucid the next minute could get aggressive in a heartbeat even if they are normally stable. Our staff worked with the police together not in place of. It is beyond the scope of a Social Worker to deescalate extremely aggressive situations with absolutely no protection. Police do need to be front-line because there is no way to know what one is going to come up against. Then after the police understands the situation and feels a social worker is needed then have them go out. This is for the Social Workers protection and for the person with mental illnesses safety including safety from self.
If they jump on my car or surrounded me I would think my life was in danger and hit the gas, hard!!!
